SV Elversberg forward Cole Campbell has confirmed his unwavering commitment to represent the United States internationally, definitively ending any speculation about his national team future. The 20-year-old, who is eligible for both the USA and Iceland, stated his decision is final as he eyes a potential first senior call-up.
International Allegiance Confirmed
Campbell, born to an American-Icelandic mother and an American father, initially played for Iceland’s U17 national team before switching his allegiance to the United States. He has since represented the USA at U19, U20, and U23 levels, making 12 youth appearances and scoring six goals.
Speaking recently, Campbell made it clear that his choice to play for the United States is irreversible. “I’ve already made my decision to switch to the US. It was for a lot of different reasons, but my future is with the US. That said, I have no second thoughts or anything. That’s a thing for me that is set in stone,” he stated. He further expressed his satisfaction with the move, highlighting the support and atmosphere within the US federation. Having grown up in the US, he considers it an honour to represent his country.
Elversberg’s Record Signing
Campbell’s international declaration comes as he continues to make an impact at club level. The forward joined SV Elversberg from Borussia Dortmund in the summer for a fee of €6 million, making him the club’s record signing. He has quickly established himself, starting all four of Elversberg’s matches this season.
His strong start to the campaign was highlighted by scoring his first goal for the club, and his first in the Bundesliga, during Elversberg’s opening 3-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. This consistent performance in Germany’s top flight could bolster his chances for a senior international debut.
Eyeing a Senior Debut
With US head coach Mauricio Pochettino expected to announce his squad for upcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Canada, and Mexico soon, Campbell is hopeful of receiving his first senior call-up. He confirmed that he has been in contact with the US national team staff for approximately two years, with initial discussions taking place during his time at Borussia Dortmund.
“I’m hoping. We will see what happens. I’m just focused on trying to perform the best that I can, and I’m praying that hopefully I get my first call-up soon. That would be a dream come true for me to represent my country,” Campbell added, eagerly anticipating the squad announcement.
