Brunner’s Explanation and Apology
The incident occurred after Brunner scored to level the score against Strasbourg on Saturday. Following the goal, the former Borussia Dortmund player made a gesture towards the opposing fans. Post-match, Brunner explained his actions, stating that supporters had been ‘talking about my family, about my mum, my dad.’ He acknowledged the high emotions of the moment, adding that he did not intend to be disrespectful. Brunner clarified that his gesture was meant to convey ‘What a goal; it’s over!’ He subsequently issued an apology for the celebration on social media.
LFP Review and Potential Ban
French football’s governing body, the LFP, is set to review the matter, which could lead to disciplinary action. Brunner faces a potential ban of up to four games as a result of the celebration. Despite the ongoing review and the possibility of a suspension, Brunner remains available for selection for Monaco’s upcoming Ligue 1 fixture against RC Lens on Friday.
Luís Defends Player’s Character
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Luís acknowledged the controversy but offered a defence of his player’s character. ‘The truth is that he is a very passionate kid, very intense; in that moment of celebration, he made a mistake,’ Luís stated. He highlighted Brunner’s immediate apology, both in person and via social media, adding, ‘Everyone knows he made a mistake. We hope that it doesn’t happen again.’ The Monaco manager also praised Brunner’s overall character and commitment to the team, noting his strong performances and dedication. Luís mentioned that Brunner had consistently shown his desire to play through ‘facts: scoring goals, running for the team, pressing, defending, and doing his job,’ concluding that he ‘cannot complain about his character’ and wants him to ‘keep doing what he does.’
