Borussia Mönchengladbach have officially announced Alexander Blessin as their new head coach. The German tactician has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at Borussia-Park until 2028, taking over from Eugen Polanski, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month.
Blessin is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, where he will address the media for the first time in his new role.
A Challenging Start to the Season
The appointment comes at a critical juncture for Borussia Mönchengladbach, who find themselves in a precarious position at the foot of the Bundesliga table. After four matches of the 2026/27 season, the club has yet to register a single point, highlighting the immediate challenge Blessin faces.
His primary task will be to revitalise a struggling squad and steer them away from the relegation zone, a situation that will test his managerial acumen from the outset.
Blessin’s Coaching Pedigree
Blessin brings a diverse coaching background to Mönchengladbach. He previously served as a youth coach at RB Leipzig, honing his skills in player development. His senior coaching career includes stints at Belgian side KV Oostende, Italian club Genoa, and Union Saint-Gilloise, also in Belgium.
Most recently, Blessin was at the helm of FC St. Pauli. However, his tenure there concluded following the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga at the end of last season. This experience with a team battling at the wrong end of the table could prove valuable as he attempts to turn around Mönchengladbach’s fortunes.
