Niclas Füllkrug has made an impressive start to his loan spell at Werder Bremen, quickly rediscovering his goal-scoring touch after a challenging period abroad. The forward has netted four goals in just five competitive appearances since returning to the German club.
This prolific form marks a significant turnaround for Füllkrug, who endured a difficult tenure at West Ham United. He joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund for €27 million in 2024 but struggled with a series of injuries, primarily muscle problems, which had rarely affected him before his move to England.
Reflecting on his time in England, Füllkrug shared his frustration. “You only have to look at my medical record: I’ve had to suffer a lot, but almost never because of muscle injuries,” he told Sport Bild, referring to his year and a half with West Ham before a loan move to AC Milan for the second half of last season. He added, “I can’t really explain why things went so badly for me at West Ham. England probably isn’t made for me as a type of player or as an athlete either.”
Now back in familiar surroundings, the 33-year-old hopes his injury woes are behind him. “Now I just hope that everything stays the way it is,” Füllkrug stated. Despite his current loan at Werder Bremen, he remains under contract with West Ham United until the summer of 2028. His strong performances could be crucial for Werder Bremen and potentially influence his future with his parent club.
