Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has provided a clear explanation for the absence of Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina from Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated farewell match for the Argentina national team. The friendly fixture against Benin is scheduled for October 7, marking a significant moment in international football.
Despite the emotional nature of the occasion, neither Dybala nor Molina were included in the Argentina squad for this international break. Gasperini, speaking to Sky Sport Italia, highlighted the practical challenges and the club’s priorities as the primary reasons for their non-attendance.
Club Commitments Take Precedence
Gasperini emphasised the significant travel time involved in a trip to Argentina, especially with crucial club fixtures looming for Roma. The Giallorossi are set to face Como and then Real Madrid shortly after the international break, making player availability and fitness paramount.
The coach explained that sending Dybala and Molina to Argentina would involve extensive flying hours so close to their upcoming matches, a scenario Roma preferred to avoid to ensure the players are in optimal condition. While Messi’s farewell is undoubtedly a momentous event, the club’s focus remains firmly on their competitive schedule, particularly with important matches on the horizon.
Squad Selection and Player Hopes
Although Dybala and Molina were not called up to the national squad, reports indicated that the pair, who collectively boast 105 caps for Argentina, had expressed a desire to be present for Messi’s final appearance. Dybala has not featured for the Argentina national team since 2024, while Molina recently served an international suspension following the 2026 World Cup final.
In contrast, several other Serie A players were indeed called up to join the Argentina squad for the farewell match. These include Roma’s Leonardo Balerdi, Matias Soule, and Santiago Castro, along with Inter captain Lautaro Martinez, Como’s Nico Paz, and Juventus winger Nico Gonzalez. This highlights that the decision regarding Dybala and Molina was specific to their club’s immediate needs and the logistical challenges.
Messi, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest, has led Argentina to World Cup glory, another World Cup final, and two Copa America titles during his illustrious international career. His departure from the Albiceleste marks the end of an era.
