France international Aurélien Tchouaméni has revealed he played through an injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a decision he made in consultation with the French national team’s medical staff. The 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder reflected on the challenges he faced during the tournament.
Playing Through Pain for France
Speaking in an interview with France 24, Tchouaméni explained that he began experiencing significant discomfort early in the competition. “By the third or fourth match – or even a little before that – I was in pain,” he stated. Despite the physical toll, the midfielder felt compelled to continue, driven by the magnitude of the event. “It’s the World Cup, so you try to do everything you can to perform at your best on the pitch,” he added.
His choice to continue playing was a calculated risk, taken after discussions with the medical team supporting Didier Deschamps’ squad. Tchouaméni expressed no regrets about his commitment, acknowledging the personal cost. “There are circumstances that call for giving it your all. I paid the price for it afterwards, but it’s part of my story and I have no regrets,” he affirmed.
Tournament Impact and Absence
Tchouaméni featured in three of France’s first four matches during the World Cup campaign. However, his injury ultimately forced him to miss crucial knockout stage fixtures. He was absent from the Round of 16 clash against Paraguay, which France won 1-0. He also missed the quarter-final encounter against Morocco, where France secured a 2-0 victory.
The midfielder made his return to the starting line-up for the semi-final match against Spain. In that game, Tchouaméni and his teammates found themselves overwhelmed by the performance of the Spanish side. Despite the challenges, his determination to represent his country on the biggest stage highlights the immense pressure and commitment often demanded of elite athletes.
