Bayer Leverkusen‘s Director of Sport, Simon Rolfes, has confirmed that the club held discussions with Nigerian striker Victor Boniface following his visible frustration on the bench during a recent match in Mainz. Rolfes indicated that the matter has been resolved, with Boniface acknowledging his behaviour.
Club Addresses Incident
Rolfes revealed that Carles Martínez, a member of the coaching staff, spoke directly with Boniface on Sunday morning to address the incident. Despite the momentary lapse, Rolfes highlighted Boniface’s overall positive development since the start of the season. “If we look back to the point where we started in early July, that’s a very positive development,” Rolfes stated. He added that Boniface still needs to take further steps in his progression.
Emphasis on Team Unity
Boniface, who has been a key player for Leverkusen, was reportedly disappointed, having built up significant expectations for himself. However, Rolfes confirmed that the striker understands his actions were inappropriate. “He knows that wasn’t smart,” Rolfes informed Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.
Rolfes emphasised the importance of team unity and support, even when individual players face frustrating situations. He described the incident as a “one-time thing” and expressed confidence that it would not be repeated. “That can’t happen. But he knows that too. That was a one-time thing, and now it’s done with,” Rolfes added.
Drawing on his own experience as a former player, Rolfes acknowledged that it is natural for players to feel frustrated when not playing. However, he stressed the necessity of handling such emotions reasonably to prevent escalations. The club expects Boniface to maintain his composure in future situations, reinforcing the collective spirit within the squad.
