Barcelona are on the cusp of making La Liga history, having matched Real Madrid’s long-standing record for the best start to a league season. Under manager Hansi Flick, the Catalan giants secured their ninth consecutive victory by beating Real Betis 5-2, equalling the nine-win streak set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 campaign.
This remarkable run sets the stage for a monumental El Clásico, where Barcelona will have the opportunity to claim the record outright. The highly anticipated fixture against their fierce rivals, Real Madrid, is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at Spotify Camp Nou.
A Record-Breaking Opportunity
The current Barcelona squad has mirrored the achievement of Miguel Muñoz’s Real Madrid side from over five decades ago. That historic Real Madrid run eventually concluded with a 0-0 draw against Pontevedra on matchday 10. Now, Barcelona faces the very team whose record they are challenging, adding an extra layer of drama to the upcoming encounter.
A victory for Flick’s side in the Clásico would see them achieve an unprecedented tenth straight league win from the start of the season, solidifying their place in La Liga’s record books. Conversely, a draw or a defeat would mean the record remains shared with Muñoz’s legendary team.
Clásico Significance Beyond the Record
Beyond the pursuit of a new record, the Clásico holds immense importance for the La Liga title race. The outcome of this match could significantly influence the league standings and set the tone for the remainder of the season for both clubs.
Barcelona’s strong domestic form is complemented by a perfect record in the Champions League, where they have secured victories against Feyenoord and Galatasaray. These European results underscore the team’s impressive start across all competitions.
Immediate European Test
Before the crucial league clash with Real Madrid, Barcelona faces another significant challenge. They are scheduled to travel to Paris Saint-Germain for a Champions League fixture on Tuesday, October 20. This match against the current European champions will serve as an immediate test of Barcelona’s form and resilience, coming just days before their potential record-breaking encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.
The stage is set for a thrilling period for Barcelona, with a chance to etch their name into La Liga history and gain a vital advantage in the title fight, all while navigating a demanding European schedule.
