Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has publicly supported a return to the national team for Niclas Füllkrug, following the striker’s impressive performances for Werder Bremen. Füllkrug has been in excellent form since rejoining Werder Bremen last summer, quickly establishing himself as a key player.

The 33-year-old forward recently scored a brace against Paderborn, contributing significantly to his club’s efforts. This strong showing has propelled Füllkrug to the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts, where he currently sits joint-first with six goals, alongside Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick. His current comfort and success at Werder Bremen mark a notable turnaround, especially after previous loan spells at West Ham United and AC Milan where he reportedly struggled to find consistent form and the same level of trust he now enjoys.

Matthäus Highlights Experience for Young Squad

Matthäus believes that Füllkrug’s experience could be a valuable asset for Jürgen Klopp’s relatively young Germany squad. While Klopp aims to rejuvenate the national team, Matthäus noted that some younger players have shown inconsistency in their performances. An experienced option like Füllkrug, even at 33, could provide stability and impact, particularly from the bench, offering a reliable presence that the squad might currently lack in certain situations. The former Germany captain emphasised that while the numbers speak for Füllkrug, the final decision on his inclusion rests with the national team coach.

Füllkrug boasts a strong international record, having scored 14 goals in 24 appearances for Germany. His last outing for the national team was in June 2025. Germany’s next fixture is scheduled for November 13, when they will face Serbia in the UEFA Nations League, presenting a potential opportunity for Füllkrug’s recall.
