Gianluigi Buffon has expressed his belief that Gennaro Gattuso deserves significant praise for Lazio‘s excellent start to the 2026-27 Serie A season. Under Gattuso’s guidance, Lazio are currently level on points with reigning champions Inter at the top of the table after seven matches.
The Rome-based club has achieved an impressive record of six wins and one draw so far this season, with a notable highlight being their dominant 3-0 victory away against Juventus this past weekend.
Gattuso’s Resurgence After National Team Exit
Gattuso’s success at Lazio marks a significant turnaround following a challenging period as the head coach of the Italy national team. He resigned from that role after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, a setback that led to questions about his suitability for top-tier management.
Despite the national team’s disappointment, Buffon, who had suggested Gattuso for the Italy job, remains steadfast in his conviction. Buffon clarified his role in the appointment process, stating: “I suggested him, I didn’t choose him.” He further defended his recommendation, highlighting Gattuso’s inherent qualities.
Buffon believes Gattuso brings empathy, a strong sense of belonging, and considerable tactical competence to his teams. He insisted, “I would recommend him again a thousand times over in the situation we were in,” referring to the circumstances surrounding the Italy national team role.
Lazio’s Season Outlook
Lazio’s strong start has exceeded many pre-season expectations. Buffon noted that many observers had predicted Lazio to finish between ninth and eleventh place before the season began, placing several other prominent clubs above them.
Looking ahead, Buffon suggested that a top seven or top six finish would represent a great result for Lazio. He added that securing Champions League qualification would be a phenomenal achievement for the club this season, underscoring the positive impact Gattuso has already made.
