Barcelona are facing significant defensive challenges as they prepare to meet Paris Saint-Germain in a crucial Champions League league phase fixture on Tuesday, October 20. Both European giants currently sit on six points in the competition standings, making this encounter a pivotal early test.
Defensive Concerns for Barcelona
The Catalan club will be without a number of key defensive players for the trip to Paris. Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, and Eric Garcia are all sidelined due to injury. Adding to their woes, young talent Roony Bardghji is also unavailable. Furthermore, Gerard Martín is listed as a doubt, potentially further depleting Barcelona’s options at the back.
These absences could force manager Xavi Hernández to make significant adjustments to his defensive line-up against a formidable PSG attack. The match comes at a demanding period for Barcelona, with their next major fixture after this Champions League clash being El Clásico.
Team News and Officials
Paris Saint-Germain also have their own injury concerns. Defender Nuno Mendes is out, while Magnes Akliouche and Senny Mayulu are both listed as doubts for the fixture. Despite these potential setbacks, both teams will be eager to secure a victory and gain an advantage in the league phase.
The match will be officiated by English referee Michael Oliver, with Italy’s Marco Di Bello assigned to VAR duties.
Champions League Context
This Matchday 3 fixture is part of the new Champions League league phase, which features 36 clubs each playing eight matches. The top eight teams will automatically qualify for the round of 16, while clubs placed ninth to 24th will enter a two-legged play-off. While a result in Paris will offer an early measure of both teams’ capabilities, the extensive league phase means there is still plenty of competition ahead, and this fixture is not considered decisive for either club’s overall European campaign.
