Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has stated that the club may not sign a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the upcoming January transfer window, despite the Georgian forward suffering a significant ACL injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.
Kvaratskhelia sustained the anterior cruciate ligament injury during PSG’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday. The diagnosis, confirmed on Wednesday, suggests the player may not feature again this campaign, a considerable blow to the French champions.
Enrique’s Stance on Replacements
Speaking on Saturday, Luis Enrique downplayed the immediate need to dip into the transfer market for a new player. He emphasised his confidence in the current squad’s depth and ability to manage such setbacks.
“No injury means that we have to sign more players,” the PSG manager stated. “At the start of the season, I said that we could handle anything, even if there were serious injuries.”
However, the Spaniard did not entirely close the door on potential incomings, acknowledging that the club remains open to opportunities that may arise. “We continue to listen to opportunities. That is a possibility that we have,” he added.
Squad Depth and Summer Signings
PSG bolstered their attacking options significantly during the summer transfer window, adding several players to their forward line. Among the arrivals were Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts. While Godts is considered the most like-for-like replacement for Kvaratskhelia, he has reportedly faced challenges since his move from Ajax.
Luis Enrique’s comments suggest a reliance on the existing talent within the squad to cover Kvaratskhelia’s absence, rather than an immediate reaction in the transfer market. The club’s strategy appears to be one of careful consideration, balancing current resources with potential market opportunities.
