Lille OSC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over local rivals RC Lens in the 125th Derby du Nord, a crucial Ligue 1 encounter. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud emerged as the hero, scoring a late winner to seal all three points for Les Dogues in the Round 9 fixture.

Lille’s Dominance Rewarded

The match, played without away support, saw Lille largely control proceedings, creating numerous opportunities throughout the game. Despite their dominance, they struggled to break the deadlock against a resilient Lens side.

Young winger Ethan Mbappé was a constant threat in the final third for Lille, testing the Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser on several occasions. Soriba Diaoune also had golden chances to put Lille ahead, including a header and a powerful shot that was denied by the crossbar.

Lens’s attacking threat was largely contained, though a dangerous counter-attack saw Saud Abdulhamid combine with Florian Thauvin, only for Lille’s goalkeeper Berke Özer to make a key save with his knee. Özer was also called into action later to deny Thauvin after a defensive mix-up involving Mbappé and Maxima Goffi. Thorgan Hazard played as a false nine for Lens, a tactical choice that saw them struggle to create significant impact upfront.

Giroud Seals Victory

As the game entered its final minutes, the tension mounted, with both sides making mistakes as fatigue set in. The decisive moment arrived when Nabil Bentaleb, who was noted for orchestrating much of Lille’s play, unleashed a long-range effort. Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser parried the shot, but substitute Olivier Giroud, a player who has reportedly shone under manager Davide Ancelotti, was alert to tap home the rebound, securing the narrow win for Lille.
