Former Italy international and 2006 World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta has recently undergone experimental surgery to correct bow-legs, a genetic condition that had caused him significant and increasing pain. The 49-year-old, known for his distinctive running style during his illustrious playing career, had the procedure on his right leg at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli in Bologna, following a similar operation on his left leg a year ago.

Addressing a Lingering Issue

Zambrotta’s bow-legged gait was a recognisable trait throughout his career, which saw him amass silverware with top European clubs including Juventus, Barcelona, and Milan. While it might have seemed an innocuous part of his playing style, the condition developed into a serious health concern off the pitch. He revealed that the pain had become unsustainable, making everyday activities like climbing stairs extremely difficult.

The former full-back admitted that he probably should have addressed the issue a decade ago but delayed the operations. The situation significantly deteriorated after he retired from professional football, prompting him to seek medical intervention to alleviate the chronic discomfort.

A Family Affair

The genetic nature of Zambrotta’s condition was highlighted by a unique family development. His father, Alberto, also suffered from bow-legs and was inspired by his son’s medical approach. Remarkably, both father and son underwent similar surgical interventions on the same day and at the same medical facility in Bologna, the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli.

Zambrotta, a key figure in Italy’s triumphant 2006 World Cup campaign, is now focused on his long-term health. The experimental surgeries aim to straighten his legs, with the hope of significantly reducing the pain that had plagued him for years.
