  • Dortmund currently holds the league’s best defensive record and could match their highest points tally since 2018-19.

Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač has issued a robust response to supporters and pundits who have attacked his team’s approach this season. The Croatian tactician insists the German top flight is not a place for pure entertainment alone.

Speaking to Frankfurter Allgemeine, Kovač challenged his detractors directly. “Tell me, apart from Bayern Munich, which club in the Bundesliga plays attractive football week after week?” he asked. He added that winning matches matters more than pleasing the eye.

“People must realise the Bundesliga is not a theatre stage. You cannot expect the same show every single time. Football is unpredictable,” the 53-year-old explained. He pointed out that almost no team scores four goals and produces spectacular attacks in every match.

Kovač admitted his squad lacks the world-class stars that Bayern Munich possess. The champions have found the net 113 times in just 31 league matches this term. “Even the wealthiest English clubs cannot match that record right now,” he noted.

Despite the criticism, statistics support Kovač’s methods. Borussia Dortmund have conceded only 31 goals this season, making their defence the strongest in the division. They have also scored 65 goals, placing them fifth in the attacking charts.

If Dortmund win their remaining three fixtures, they will finish with 76 points. This would equal their best total since the 2018-19 campaign. The result-focused approach appears to be delivering solid outcomes for the Westphalian club.
