Although Borussia Dortmund sit in second place in the Bundesliga, the club has faced heavy criticism this season. Supporters complain about dull tactics and unpredictable form.
The situation worsened this weekend. On Sunday, BVB produced a flat performance and fell 1-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach. This result marked their third loss in just four matches.
Despite this poor run, the Dortmund board remains loyal to their coach. Sources indicate the hierarchy wishes to retain Niko Kovač past 2027, when his present contract finishes.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, senior officials will meet with Kovač’s representatives shortly. They aim to begin negotiations over an extended deal.
Sporting director Ole Book defended the Croatian boss following the Gladbach setback. “We have already shown clearly that we believe in Niko. I really enjoy working alongside him,” he explained. “I answered questions on this topic before the game today, and my response was very positive. The defeat does not alter that stance at all.”
The 52-year-old took charge at Signal Iduna Park in February 2025.
