FC Barcelona plan to strengthen their defence this summer. The Catalan giants want a new centre-back, but they may also need another full-back before the 2026-27 season kicks off.
Much depends on Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese star has been outstanding on the left flank since joining on loan in January. However, if Barcelona cannot secure a permanent deal with Al Hilal, they will need to find a replacement. Even if they do sign him, the right side of the defence remains a concern.
Jules Kounde has endured a poor campaign as the starting right-back. The Frenchman has not matched the high standards he set during the 2024-25 season. With no natural backup in the squad, head coach Hansi Flick desperately needs reinforcements on that flank.
Sporting director Deco has turned his attention to Andrei Ratiu. The Romania international currently plays for Rayo Vallecano. Deco actually met with the player’s representatives last year, but no official bid followed. Now, 12 months later, Ratiu has emerged as a priority target once again.
Barcelona view the 26-year-old as an “interesting player profile” who could solve their tactical problems. The club enjoys a strong working relationship with Rayo president Raul Martin Presa. This connection could help them beat rival clubs to the signature.
However, the transfer faces a major hurdle. Rayo Vallecano intend to demand Ratiu’s full €25 million release clause. Barcelona must spend heavily on a centre-back and a striker this summer. Given their well-known money troubles, finding extra funds for Ratiu could prove impossible.
