Hamburger SV produced a memorable performance at the Volksparkstadion to defeat Europa League finalists SC Freiburg 3-2. The Bundesliga clash delivered drama, excitement, and an emotional farewell for one key player.

The hosts started strongly and took the lead after fourteen minutes. Albert Grønbæk advanced down the left wing before sending a dangerous cross into the centre. Bakery Jatta arrived at the perfect moment to score his first-ever Bundesliga goal with a simple tap-in.

However, Freiburg replied almost immediately. Just two minutes later, the visitors launched a swift counterattack. Lukas Kübler sent a low ball across the face of the goal, and Igor Matanović finished calmly to make it 1-1. The striker then celebrated provocatively in front of the home fans, reminding them of his past connection with local rivals FC St. Pauli.

Both teams created further chances before the break. Fabio Vieira struck the woodwork with a powerful shot from distance for HSV. The teams entered the interval level at one goal apiece.

The second half began slowly until the sixty-fourth minute. Luka Vušković took a free-kick from thirty yards out. His shot hit the defensive wall but took a lucky deflection past goalkeeper Noah Atubolu and rolled into the net. This goal gave Hamburg a 2-1 lead.

The strike carried extra emotion as it was probably Vušković’s final home appearance. The Croatian defender has enjoyed a successful loan spell and now expects a big-money move to a major European club this summer.

HSV extended their advantage just three minutes later. Substitute Fabio Baldé raced clear on a counterattack and finished with composure to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.

Freiburg fought back late in the match. Matanović headed home his second goal from a corner in the eighty-seventh minute to set up a tense finish. The guests could not find an equaliser, however. Hamburg nearly added a fourth when Vieira hit the post again and Nicolai Remberg converted the rebound, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The result marks a remarkable achievement for the newly promoted side against a team that reached the Europa League final.
