  • Barcelona abandon their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez
  • The Catalan club now prioritise Chelsea forward Joao Pedro instead
  • The deal could cost approximately €70 million depending on Chelsea’s league finish
  • The Brazilian offers a physical presence and aerial threat that Alvarez lacks
  • Barcelona hope to complete the signing before the World Cup begins

Barcelona have changed their summer transfer plans. The Spanish giants now want to sign Joao Pedro from Chelsea. This comes after they failed to secure Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

The Catalan club had made Alvarez their main target. However, Atletico refuse to sell the Argentine striker. Paris Saint-Germain also want to sign him. Barcelona only have €100 million to spend. This amount is not enough to convince Atletico to sell.

Now Deco, the Director of Football, is focusing on Joao Pedro. Reports from Spain say Barcelona could pay €70 million for the Brazilian. But Brazilian media suggest the fee might reach €100 million.

The price depends on Chelsea’s final league position. If Chelsea do not qualify for the Champions League, the fee could drop. Barcelona want to complete the deal before the World Cup starts.

Joao Pedro is 24 years old. He offers something different to Alvarez. The Chelsea man is stronger in the air. He also holds up the ball better. These qualities remind Barcelona of Robert Lewandowski.

However, Pedro does not score as many goals as Lewandowski. He has limited experience at the top level. This season was his first in the Champions League. He has only played eight times for Brazil.

Barcelona believe Pedro fits their system better than Alvarez. They hope to announce the signing soon.
