FSV Mainz 05 have announced that club captain Silvan Widmer has put pen to paper on a new deal to remain at the Bundesliga outfit. The 33-year-old has pledged his future to the German side.
The Swiss international full-back arrived at Mainz ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. He has skippered the team for the past two seasons. This term, he has made 39 appearances in all competitions. He has scored three goals and supplied one assist for his teammates.
Widmer follows two fellow defenders in securing long-term stays. Stefan Bell and Danny Da Costa both signed extensions earlier this week. The captain becomes the third member of the back line to agree new terms in recent days.
Niko Bungert, the club’s sporting director, praised the skipper’s impact. He explained that Widmer has grown into an essential figure for the squad. Bungert highlighted his conduct during the past six months. He noted that the player led from the front when the team faced intense pressure. He also credited the captain with playing a key role in their improved form during the second half of the campaign.
