Inter Milan appear to have abandoned their plans to bring Guglielmo Vicario back to Italy. The Nerazzurri had tracked the Tottenham shot-stopper for much of the current campaign. However, fresh reports now suggest the Serie A side are exploring alternative options between the sticks.
The former Empoli custodian moved to North London in the summer of 2023. Spurs paid €19 million to secure his signature. This transaction made him the most expensive departure in the Tuscan club’s history.
Life at Tottenham has proved difficult during the past two seasons. The London outfit have battled against relegation from the Premier League throughout the 2025-26 term. They currently sit in 17th place or lower for the second consecutive year. Yet their fortunes have shifted since Roberto De Zerbi took charge in late March. The Italian boss has guided the team to two victories and two draws in their last four outings. A positive result against Chelsea on Tuesday evening could confirm their safety in the top flight.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tottenham remaining in the Premier League would create significant obstacles for Inter. The Serie A leaders would find it harder to negotiate a reasonable price for the 27-year-old.
The second factor involves Inter’s existing squad depth. The club signed Josep Martinez from Genoa in 2024 for €15.5 million. The Spanish keeper now firmly eyes the number one position. Veteran shot-stopper Yann Sommer will leave the San Siro when the current term concludes. Rather than spending heavily on Vicario, Inter could simply promote Martinez. This approach would allow them to search for a cheaper back-up option instead of investing in a costly new first-choice keeper.
Martinez already understands manager Cristian Chivu’s tactical system. He has gained valuable minutes in domestic cup competitions this season. He also boasts a full campaign of Serie A experience from his spell at Genoa.
