Villarreal produced a stunning attacking display to defeat Atletico Madrid 5-1 on the final day of the La Liga season. The Yellow Submarine secured third place and automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League.
The clash marked the end of Marcelino Garcia Toral’s second spell in charge at La Ceramica. The Basque coach watched his side put five goals past Los Colchoneros in a memorable farewell.
Atletico started the brighter of the two sides but fell behind after half an hour. Nicolas Pepe won a penalty when brought down by goalkeeper Juan Musso. Club captain Dani Parejo converted the spot-kick on his final appearance for the club.
Four minutes later, Ayoze Perez doubled the lead with a close-range finish. It was only his second goal in 18 matches. Georges Mikautadze then made it 3-0 on 40 minutes after a swift counter-attack. The Georgian striker has now scored 15 goals in his debut season.
Atletico pulled one back through a headed effort from an Antoine Griezmann corner. However, Pape Gueye quickly restored the three-goal cushion with a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area before half-time. Ayoze grabbed his second goal nine minutes after the break to complete the rout.
The home side gave Parejo a warm reception when he left the pitch for the final time. The veteran midfielder ends his spell at the club with a victory.
Attention now turns to the summer for both clubs. Villarreal must appoint a new manager, with Rayo Vallecano’s Inigo Perez tipped to replace Marcelino. Atletico, meanwhile, face speculation over Julian Alvarez’s future, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain monitoring the Argentine striker.
