FC Barcelona have set their sights on Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol. The Catalan club want to add the Croatia international to their squad during the current transfer window.
This news comes after Barcelona agreed to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. That deal cost around €80 million. Now the Spanish giants hope to bring Gvardiol to La Liga.
Spanish radio station Cadena Cope claims Barcelona are working on the transfer. However, they made an error about the player’s contract. Gvardiol actually has two years left, not one. His deal with Manchester City runs until 2028.
Some sources suggest City offered Gvardiol to Barcelona. This means the English club might want to sell, rather than Barcelona making the first move.
Barcelona previously wanted Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan. They have now cooled their interest in the Italian defender. Earlier reports showed Barcelona liked Gvardiol, but thought he cost too much.
Real Madrid also want a new centre-back this summer. They too have been linked with Gvardiol. The 24-year-old may be considering his future at City. There are no talks about a new contract at the moment.
Gvardiol joined Manchester City from RB Leipzig in 2023. The transfer fee was €90 million. He has played 122 matches for City, scoring 13 goals and making 10 assists. The defender can play at centre-back or left-back.
The player started his career at Dinamo Zagreb. He moved to Leipzig in 2021 for €36.8 million. After two good seasons in Germany, City paid double that amount to sign him.
