France international Ibrahima Konate is set to leave Liverpool without a transfer fee when his current deal expires at the end of June. The 27-year-old centre-back will depart Anfield after talks for a new contract failed to reach a conclusion.

The defender joined the Merseyside club from German side RB Leipzig four years ago. He cost £35 million and signed a five-year agreement. Since then, he has become a key figure in the team’s defence.

Both sides wanted to continue their partnership at first. In April, Konate told the media he was “close to an agreement” and believed there was a “big chance” he would stay. Talks began in November 2023 but never succeeded.

The main problem is money. The player wants higher wages than the club is willing to pay. Liverpool thinks the cost would upset their financial balance and affect other squad needs. Because of this, the negotiations have stopped completely.

This exit means Liverpool lose another important player for nothing. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already left for free this summer. The club also lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid recently, though the Spanish club paid a small fee to release him early.

Manager Arne Slot now faces a problem at the back. Only Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez remain as experienced centre-halves. The club signed Jeremy Jacquet for £60 million and Giovanni Leoni last summer, but both are teenagers with injury problems. Leoni, 19, has a serious knee injury and will miss one year. Jacquet, 20, missed four months last season with a shoulder problem.

Liverpool tried to sign Marc Guehi last year but failed. The England defender later joined Manchester City. Now the club must decide whether to search for another centre-back or trust their young players.

Konate’s situation shows a familiar pattern at Anfield. In recent years, several stars left for free. Roberto Firmino departed in 2023. Georginio Wijnaldum, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Naby Keita, Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all left without the club receiving money.

The Frenchman had said he wanted to stay. He even asked journalists to speak to sporting director Richard Hughes to confirm his commitment. Slot also called him “vital” to the team. However, the gap between what Konate wants and what Liverpool will pay is too large.

At 27, Konate is in his best years. Clubs around the world will want to sign him without paying a transfer fee. His next move may depend on his performance at the World Cup. For now, he leaves quietly, unlike Salah and Robertson who said goodbye to fans last weekend.

This is another blow for Liverpool after a difficult season. The club must now solve their defensive problems while also finding replacements for attacking players.
