- Gasperini views Totti as a vital link between the dressing room and boardroom
- The club legend departed in 2019 after feeling marginalised in his previous position
Francesco Totti could soon make a dramatic comeback to AS Roma. The iconic former captain might take up a powerful directorial position at the Serie A giants.
Current head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly driving this initiative. He is working closely with club owner Ryan Friedkin to bring the legend back to the Stadio Olimpico.
Totti spent his entire professional career wearing the Giallorossi shirt. He supported the club as a boy before becoming their most celebrated symbol. He hung up his boots in 2017 after 25 years of service.
He initially remained with the club in a staff role. However, he walked away in 2019. Totti felt the previous administration treated him like a mascot rather than giving him real authority.
The Friedkin family had already planned to use Totti as a Centenary Ambassador. That role was set for 2027 when the club marks 100 years. However, Gasperini wants something more substantial now.
The coach believes Totti can unite the dressing room with the boardroom. He sees the former number ten as the perfect mediator between players and directors.
Claudio Ranieri was supposed to fill this gap earlier this season. However, his strained relationship with Gasperini led to his dismissal before the campaign ended.
