Arsenal’s dream of conquering Europe ended in cruel fashion at the Puskas Arena, where Paris Saint-Germain clinched a 4-3 victory on penalties to defend their Champions League title. The clash finished level at 1-1 following 120 minutes of intense football, with neither side able to find a winner in extra time.

The North London outfit, who had already secured the Premier League trophy this term, were chasing a momentous double two decades after their last appearance in this showpiece fixture. Meanwhile, the French champions became the first side since Real Madrid’s three-year reign between 2015 and 2018 to successfully retain the prestigious trophy.

Mikel Arteta’s charges began brightly and took the lead within six minutes. Kai Havertz capitalised on a defensive error, collecting the ball after Marquinhos’ clearance struck Martin Odegaard. The German forward kept his composure to lift a delicate finish over the advancing Matvey Safonov from a tight angle. This strike made him only the third player in history to find the net for two different clubs in a Champions League final, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic.

The Londoners’ backline, which had remained unbeaten throughout the tournament prior to this fixture, frustrated PSG’s star-studded attack for long periods. However, the Parisians drew level from the penalty spot midway through the contest. Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the box, allowing Ousmane Dembele to convert confidently past David Raya.

The second half and extra period offered few clear opportunities, though Arsenal felt they should have had a spot-kick of their own when Noni Madueke went down under pressure from Nuno Mendes. The appeals were waved away without a video review, prompting frustration on the Gunners’ bench that resulted in yellow cards for Declan Rice and Arteta.

The decisive moments arrived during the shootout. After successful conversions from both sides, Eberechi Eze saw his effort saved, only for Raya to immediately deny Mendes and level the tally. The sequence continued until Gabriel stepped forward with Arsenal’s fifth attempt. The Brazilian defender, despite an outstanding performance throughout the match, sent his kick sailing over the crossbar into the stands behind the goal.

Gunners captain Martin Odegaard expressed his disappointment but urged perspective regarding the campaign. “We are gutted to come this close and fall short. However, we must recognise what we have built this season. Winning the Premier League remains a massive achievement,” he stated. “We will support Eze and Gabriel. We would not have reached this stage without their contributions.”

Midfielder Declan Rice echoed these sentiments. “Losing on penalties is devastating, but this is a lottery. We have grown from quarter-final exits to semi-finals and now the final. This setback will not define us. We will return stronger,” he told reporters.

Arteta acknowledged the pain of defeat while praising his squad’s resilience. “It is difficult to accept when you lose on spot-kicks after such a consistent run in the competition. Nobody can take away the hurt, but I am immensely proud of how these players represent this badge,” the Spaniard commented.
