Portuguese winger Rafael Leao has ended speculation about a move to Turkey after revealing his intention to quit AC Milan. The 25-year-old spoke to media in his home country late yesterday. He admitted that the time has come for a new challenge away from San Siro.

Fenerbahce had shown strong interest in the forward. Hakan Safi, who is running for the club’s presidency, confirmed he held talks with the player. However, Safi stated that Leao will not join the Turkish side even if Milan legend Paolo Maldini becomes their technical director.

“I met with Leao recently,” Safi explained at a press conference. “After just ten minutes, I realised he would not sign for us. We made enquiries and discovered this.”

The rejection comes despite Fenerbahce’s plans to appoint Maldini, who previously served as AC Milan’s technical director. This connection was not enough to convince the Portugal international to swap Serie A for the Turkish Super Lig.

Leao’s contract with AC Milan runs until June 2028. Reports suggest the Italian club have grown frustrated with his inconsistent performances. They are now willing to sell him during the current transfer window.

Sources indicate the former Lille star has his heart set on England. Manchester United are reportedly his preferred choice. The Red Devils have yet to make a formal bid, but the player is waiting for an offer from Old Trafford.
