Chelsea have completed the signing of Katie McCabe. The Republic of Ireland captain moves to Stamford Bridge following the end of her contract with Arsenal.
The 30-year-old defender spent over a decade with the Gunners. She made 305 appearances and became one of the club’s most important players during the Women’s Super League era.
McCabe can play in several positions across the defence and midfield. She operates effectively as a full-back, winger, or centre-back.
The Blues have held a long-term interest in the Irish international. They first tried to sign her in 2015, but McCabe chose Arsenal instead. They reportedly made another attempt in 2023, yet Arsenal rejected their approach.
This summer, Chelsea moved quickly to win the race for her signature. They beat WSL champions Manchester City to secure the deal.
McCabe helped Arsenal win the Champions League in 2025. She also lifted the WSL title in 2019, the FA Cup, three League Cups, and the Champions Cup during her time in North London.
Her exit follows a tense Champions League quarter-final between the two clubs in April. During the second leg, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor received a red card. She reacted angrily after McCabe pulled Alyssa Thompson’s hair.
McCabe did not attend Arsenal’s trophy parade on Sunday. The team celebrated their Champions Cup victory from February.
The arrival strengthens Chelsea’s defence. The club lost the WSL title last season and continues to hunt for a first Champions League trophy.
The transfer creates questions about the squad’s future. Niamh Charles and Lucy Bronze both face uncertain futures, with Real Madrid interested in signing them.
