Racing Santander have claimed the Segunda Division championship following a convincing victory over Cadiz on the final day of the season. The Cantabrian club entered the matchday with promotion already secured, but they needed a strong result to fend off Deportivo La Coruna and lift the trophy.

Deportivo La Coruna had also booked their place in Spain’s top flight prior to the weekend. However, their 2-1 defeat against Las Palmas allowed Racing to open a gap at the summit. The Galicians went into the final round just two points behind the leaders, but the loss proved costly as Santander ran riot against their opponents.

The battle for the final promotion places through the play-offs produced exciting action across the division. Las Palmas snatched fifth position with their victory over Deportivo, booking a semi-final berth. Burgos pushed hard with a 1-0 win against Andorra, but they ultimately missed out on the top six by remaining level on points with Castellon, who secured the last spot despite finishing with an identical tally.

Castellon gained from results elsewhere, edging out Eibar who began the day with a small chance of qualification. Meanwhile, Malaga sealed fourth place with a 2-0 triumph away to relegated Real Zaragoza. Almeria clinched third spot after Sergio Arribas, the division’s leading marksman with 25 strikes, netted the only goal in their 1-0 success against Real Valladolid.

The play-off fixtures are now confirmed. Castellon will meet Almeria across two legs on the 6th and 9th of June. Las Palmas will face Malaga on the 7th and 10th of June. The final is scheduled for the 14th and 20th of June.

At the other end of the table, Mirandes suffered the agony of relegation. The club travelled to Leganes needing a victory to ensure survival, but a 68th-minute goal from Alex Millan condemned them to defeat. The 1-0 loss means Los Jabalies will compete in the third tier next campaign.
