Arne Slot says Liverpool remains among Europe’s best clubs despite losing his job as manager. The club sacked the 47-year-old on Saturday after a disappointing season.

Slot won the Premier League title in his first year at Anfield. However, Liverpool finished fifth this term. They were 25 points behind champions Arsenal.

The club has started talks with Andoni Iraola. The former Bournemouth manager could take charge next season.

Slot wrote an open letter to fans in the Liverpool Echo. He said he felt welcome from day one. “That is something I treasure,” he added.

“I leave with full confidence in the future,” he wrote. “The players have given everything. They upheld the club’s values. They created unforgettable moments.”

The Dutchman lost 20 matches in all competitions. But he secured Champions League football for next season. “This was an important duty,” he said. “It ensures Liverpool can compete at the highest level.”

Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024. Klopp left after nine years. Slot won the club’s 20th league title with four games remaining. Fans celebrated in the streets outside the stadium.

“It meant more because you enjoyed it with us,” Slot said. “You sang our songs. You cheered the goals. On trophy day, you filled the streets and lined the roads.”

Slot also remembered Diogo Jota. The forward died in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva last summer. Players were preparing for pre-season training.

“The loss was indescribable,” Slot said. “But the love and support from the Liverpool family was extraordinary. The way you honoured Diogo will stay with me forever.”

He also mentioned the trophy parade in May 2025. He referred to the spirit shown after Paul Doyle drove his car through crowds on Water Street. Doyle received a prison sentence of 21 years and six months in December for dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm.

“I saw your compassion and unity first-hand,” Slot told fans. “This spirit has helped the city before. I hope it brings justice for those who suffered.”
