Liverpool have named Andoni Iraola as their new manager. The 43-year-old has signed a deal to lead the club for the next two seasons. He replaces Arne Slot, who departed this weekend just one year after winning the Premier League title.

Slot left his post following a disappointing campaign. The Reds finished with only 60 points, their lowest total since 2015. They ended the season 25 points behind champions Arsenal, though they did qualify for the Champions League.

Iraola arrives from Bournemouth, where he spent the last two years. He guided the Cherries to sixth place in the table, just three points behind Liverpool. This result secured European football for the south coast club for the first time.

The Basque coach expressed his excitement about the move. “I am really excited,” he said. “You do not need many reasons to join Liverpool. It is a massive club.” He added that he understands the high expectations at Anfield. “I know what is expected here. I am ready for this challenge.”

The new boss wants to work with top players and fight for trophies. He hopes to bring his backroom staff, Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper, with him from Bournemouth.

The club’s sporting director Richard Hughes played a key role in the appointment. Hughes worked with Iraola when he was technical director at Bournemouth. Together with chief executive Michael Edwards, they decided the team needed a more aggressive style of play.

Liverpool spent £450 million on new players last summer. They broke the British transfer record to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £125 million. They also paid £116 million for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

Iraola has a history of overachieving. As a player, he spent 15 years at Athletic Club. As a manager, he has coached in Cyprus and Spain. He led Rayo Vallecano to promotion before moving to England.

At Bournemouth, his team beat several top sides including Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola even praised Bournemouth’s style as an example of modern football. Fans at Anfield will hope Iraola can bring that same energy and success to Merseyside.
