Macclesfield FC have suspended co-owner Robert Smethurst after police arrested him on suspicion of a serious offence. The 48-year-old businessman was taken into custody on 19 May in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Officers held him on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour.

The National League North club released a statement confirming the suspension. They said Smethurst would temporarily step away from all club duties while the board seeks legal guidance. The directors asked fans to avoid speculation during this period.

Speaking to the BBC, Smethurst confirmed his arrest but strongly denied the claims. He called the allegations “an absolute load of rubbish” and said he felt devastated by the situation. The businessman stated he loves the supporters and hopes they will stand by him.

Cheshire Constabulary confirmed that a 48-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday 19 May. He has since been released on bail while detectives continue their investigation.

Smethurst rescued the club from insolvency in 2020. He previously appointed former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage as manager. However, he has since reduced his shareholding in the club. The board insists they are acting to protect the club’s future interests.
