England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Declan Rice will serve as the team’s vice-captain during the upcoming World Cup. The Arsenal midfielder will support Harry Kane as the squad prepares for the finals in the United States.
Rice brings plenty of experience to the role. The 27-year-old has represented the Three Lions 72 times. He recently enjoyed a successful season with Arsenal, helping the club secure the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final.
The former West Ham player first led the national side in October. He took the armband during a friendly match against Wales when Kane was not available. Ollie Watkins started that game as the main striker.
Tuchel made the announcement following Saturday’s friendly victory over New Zealand. “I think I would say Declan is my vice-captain,” the German coach stated. He explained that he had already discussed the position with Rice during the Wales camp.
Four Arsenal players have now linked up with the England squad in America. Rice joins Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze at the training base in Florida. The group started their preparations on Sunday.
The team faces one more public friendly before the tournament begins. They will meet Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday. After that, they will play a private match against Miami FC behind closed doors.
England’s World Cup campaign kicks off on 17 June. They will play Croatia in their opening Group L match. The Three Lions will also face Ghana and Panama as they aim to progress to the knockout stages.
