John McGinn scored at 2:28am UK time on Monday morning. His deflected shot gave Scotland a 1-0 victory over Haiti. The goal ended 36 years of waiting for a World Cup win.
Thousands of fans stayed awake through the night to watch the clash. In Glasgow, over 5,000 supporters gathered at the Ovo Hydro arena. Similar parties took place across Scotland and in Boston, USA.
The match was not easy for Scotland. The team struggled to play well on the pitch against Haiti, who are ranked 83rd in the world. However, fans did not care about the quality of the football. They only wanted the result.
Scotland had not played in a World Cup since 1998. Their last victory in the tournament came in 1990 against Sweden. This win puts them at the top of Group C.
Famous Scottish faces travelled to Boston for the game. Singer Rod Stewart cancelled a concert to attend with his family. Actor Gerard Butler and chef Gordon Ramsay were also in the crowd. Ramsay visited the players before kick-off to offer support.
Scottish fans wore kilts and played bagpipes in Boston. Local reports said the visitors drank many bars dry. One supporter told reporters his flight ran out of beer.
The Scottish government has announced a special bank holiday for Monday 15 June. First Minister John Swinney said he was proud to be the first leader to see Scotland win a World Cup match.
Scotland will now face Morocco and Brazil in their remaining group games. The team stands a good chance of reaching the next round.
