Patrick Beach emerged as the hero for Australia after the national team began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a solid 2-0 victory against Turkey in Vancouver. The Socceroos’ goalkeeper only discovered he would start the match 48 hours before kick-off, yet he produced several crucial saves to keep his side in the contest.

Manager Tony Popovic chose Beach instead of captain Maty Ryan. It was a brave decision that proved correct. The shot-stopper denied Turkey many times, including a spectacular first-half stop to push Abdulkerim Bardakci’s powerful strike onto the post.

“I found out two days ago,” Beach explained. “The boss and the goalkeeping coach pulled me aside. They said I had earned my place. They gave me the confidence I needed to go out and do my job.”

The breakthrough arrived through Nestory Irankunda, who finished off a swift counter-attack. The forward ran onto a pass from Paul Okon-Engstler before firing past the Turkish keeper, sparking wild scenes among the players and the 10,000 travelling fans.

“It was absolute limbs,” Beach said, describing the celebration. “The whole crowd jumped up in yellow and green. Everyone went crazy. I went crazy with the crowd behind me. It was an unbelievable moment.”

Irankunda paid tribute to Tim Cahill by punching the corner flag, copying the former Everton star’s famous celebration. The goal came exactly twenty years after Cahill scored twice against Japan at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

“Timmy is my biggest inspiration in Australian football,” Irankunda admitted. “I look up to him and I want to be like him one day. I am really, really proud to get the goal.”

The Bayern Munich youngster also praised his goalkeeper’s contribution. “Patrick kept us in the game,” he stated. “Many people did not expect him to start, but he showed the world his quality. He made a lot of important saves. Without him, the score could have been different.”

Turkey pressed for an equaliser after the break, but Beach stood firm to preserve his clean sheet. The win gives Australia three vital points as they fight to reach the knockout stages.

Popovic expressed his delight after the final whistle. “As head coach, this makes me proud,” he said. “We put smiles on the faces of supporters who travelled so far. This is a wonderful young group of men.”

For Beach, the night fulfilled a childhood ambition. “This is the pinnacle of football,” he said. “This is all you think about as a kid. To play for your country on the world stage and win the first game against strong opposition is a dream come true.”
