- Peixoto promises attacking football and a strong return to the top flight
Wolverhampton Wanderers have named Cesar Peixoto as their new head coach. The Portuguese manager has signed a two-year deal at Molineux.
Peixoto takes over from Rob Edwards, who left the club last week. Edwards was dismissed just seven months after his appointment. The team was relegated from the Premier League during his time in charge, winning only three of 27 league matches.
The 46-year-old joins from Gil Vicente in Portugal. He previously won 16 of his 46 games with that club.
Speaking to the club’s website, Peixoto expressed his pride at joining the historic English side. He promised to implement an offensive style of play with good organisation. He also stressed the importance of matching the passion and energy of the supporters.
Nathan Shi, the executive chairman, welcomed the new appointment. He praised Peixoto’s leadership qualities, mentality and work ethic. Shi stated that the coach demonstrated the hunger and clear identity the club needs for its future.
The timing of Edwards’ dismissal surprised many observers. The former boss had recently helped secure signings including defender Kieran Trippier. Club hero Raul Jimenez had also returned, suggesting Edwards would lead the Championship campaign.
Peixoto now faces the task of securing promotion back to the Premier League. He plans to build a team with strong character and identity. His approach will focus on high intensity, aggressive pressing and dominating possession.
The appointment represents a new direction for the Midlands club. While Edwards had previous success winning promotion from the Championship, Peixoto brings fresh ideas from Portuguese football.
