Bukayo Saka has confessed he is taking a significant risk with his physical condition to represent England at the World Cup. The Arsenal forward insists he feels prepared to compete despite battling a persistent Achilles tendon injury.

The 24-year-old appeared as a substitute during England’s final warm-up match against Costa Rica. However, national team manager Thomas Tuchel has warned that they are monitoring Saka’s fitness situation with extreme care.

Saka reportedly suffered the damage during the Carabao Cup final versus Manchester City in March. He missed seven consecutive Arsenal fixtures immediately after that match. Since returning to action, he has completed only one full 90-minute appearance out of five matches. He was also withdrawn before the final whistle during the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

When asked whether he accepted Tuchel’s assessment that he is not ready to start a complete match, Saka responded diplomatically. He stated he would never publicly disagree with his manager. However, he praised the medical teams at both Arsenal and England for managing his recovery brilliantly since March. He confirmed he feels stronger now than he has for several months and is ready to play.

The winger admitted he has been competing while carrying pain. He explained that professional footballers face difficult decisions when they are not fully fit. They must choose between resting or playing knowing that supporters will judge them by normal standards regardless of their health. Saka said he accepts this gamble and believes it has paid off so far. He intends to continue this approach, noting his condition has improved markedly since March.

Noni Madueke could replace Saka in the starting eleven for Wednesday’s clash with Croatia in Dallas. Tuchel might select the Chelsea winger to avoid risking Saka’s fitness at this stage. Both players, along with Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze, received additional recovery time following Arsenal’s commitments in the Champions League.

Saka believes winning the domestic league title has boosted the mentality of the Arsenal players involved. The club secured their first Premier League trophy in 22 years this season. Saka explained that understanding what it takes to win major silverware provides greater confidence and freedom.

Meanwhile, defender John Stones is likely to start his 25th consecutive tournament match. The Manchester City centre-back has featured sparingly for his club this season. The 32-year-old previously considered ending his playing career last summer. He revealed that Manchester City encouraged him to seek a new challenge elsewhere. Instead, he chose to fight for his place, drawing on childhood experiences of overcoming setbacks. He now feels he is in excellent physical condition ahead of the tournament.
