Thomas Tuchel has promised that England will play exciting football to thrill fans watching in pubs across the country during the World Cup. The England manager made these comments after his side defeated Croatia 4-2 in their opening match on Wednesday.
The first half proved difficult for the Three Lions. They defended too deeply and appeared passive, allowing Croatia to cancel out Harry Kane’s two goals with soft equalisers. The teams entered the break level at 2-2.
However, England emerged transformed after halftime. Jude Bellingham sparked the revival with a powerful run and finish just two minutes into the second period. Tuchel revealed he had urged his players to remain calm and focus on their natural style rather than worrying about the scoreline.
The team created seven clear chances before the hour mark, though they failed to convert them. Croatia struggled to contain the attacking pressure. Marcus Rashford eventually sealed the victory in the 85th minute with a clinical goal on the counterattack.
Tuchel hopes this aggressive approach will continue throughout the tournament. “The boys showed exactly what we want in the second half,” he stated. “Nobody can promise results, but we can promise effort. People in pubs will enjoy watching this.”
The manager explained the tactical shift. “We dropped into a deep block too early in the first half. We lost confidence and became too passive. After the break, we pressed higher and played with more aggression.”
The match took place at Dallas Stadium, where humid conditions challenged the players despite the air-conditioned dome. John Stones suffered cramps in both legs, while Harry Kane also experienced muscle tightness after the final whistle. Declan Rice continues to play through hamstring and back problems.
England will face Ghana on Tuesday in their next group stage fixture.
