Mexico have qualified for the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a narrow win against South Korea in Guadalajara. They are the first nation to confirm their place in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
The match took place at the Estadio Akron, located on the outskirts of the city. This modern venue opened in 2010 and looks different from the old Estadio Jalisco, which hosted famous matches during the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. Many seats were empty during this game, particularly in the corporate sections.
The single goal came early in the second half. South Korea’s goalkeeper, Kim Seung-gyu, attempted to collect a high ball. However, he collided with defender Lee Ki-hyuk and dropped the ball. Mexico’s Luis Romo took advantage of the mistake and scored. This was Romo’s fifth international goal.
Mexico’s manager, Javier Aguirre, made three changes to his team from the first match. He selected Romo instead of Álvaro Fidalgo. Many fans had wanted to see 17-year-old Gilberto Mora start, but Aguirre did not pick him.
Near the end of the game, Mexico’s goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made two excellent saves to protect the lead. First, he stopped a header from Cho Gue-sung. Then he quickly reacted to save Yang Hyun-jun’s follow-up shot.
Both teams played carefully because they had already won their opening matches. A draw would almost guarantee progress to the next round for both sides. This defensive approach meant there were few exciting attacking moments. The crowd became frustrated at times and whistled during long periods of South Korean possession.
The two countries share a strong friendship. In 2018, South Korea beat Germany at the World Cup, which helped Mexico advance to the knockout stage. Mexican fans celebrated by carrying the South Korean ambassador through the streets of Mexico City. However, on the pitch, Mexico were happy to accept the gift from Kim’s error.
South Korea’s captain, Son Heung-min, had another difficult match. The 33-year-old appeared tired and could not escape Mexico’s offside trap. He missed one good chance because he could not control the ball properly. The manager replaced him later in the game.
South Korea can still reach the last 16 if they defeat South Africa in their final group game. A draw might also be sufficient. However, their performance suggests they will struggle against stronger opponents. Mexico have won both their matches but have not shown much flair or creativity in their play.
