Tunisia have made a dramatic change to their technical bench during the FIFA World Cup 2026. The North African nation has removed Sabri Lamouchi from his position as head coach. This decision comes just days after the team suffered a heavy 5-1 loss against Sweden in their opening group stage fixture.
The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed the departure through an official statement. They described the exit as a “mutual agreement” to end the contract. However, reports suggest the sacking makes history. Lamouchi is now the first manager to lose his job after only one match at a World Cup finals tournament.
The former Nottingham Forest boss faced a short stay in charge. He accepted the role in January this year and managed the Carthage Eagles for merely five matches. The heavy defeat against Sweden proved too costly for his position.
Taking over the reins is Hervé Renard, the experienced French tactician. The 57-year-old will guide the team for the remainder of the competition. Renard brings valuable tournament experience to the role. He previously shocked the football world by leading Saudi Arabia to a 2-1 victory over eventual champions Argentina during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Renard’s CV includes managing several African nations. He took charge of Morocco at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He has also worked with Ivory Coast, Zambia, and Angola at international level. Fans will recognise him for his trademark fitted white dress shirt on the touchline.
