Grimsby Town have announced the sad death of their recruitment specialist Alex Hughes. The 38-year-old died unexpectedly, leaving the League Two club and his family in mourning.
Hughes was the son of Mark Hughes, the former Manchester United forward and Wales international. He joined the Mariners in 2025 and became a key figure in the club’s football department.
Before moving to Grimsby, Hughes held positions at several other clubs. His career included roles at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde and Morecambe.
The Hughes family issued a statement through the League Managers Association. They said they were heartbroken by the sudden loss. They added that Alex would be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Grimsby Town released a tribute to their colleague. They described him as a loving husband to Jessica and a devoted father to his two children, Sebastian and Leonardo. The club also remembered him as a cherished son, brother and friend.
Polly Bancroft, chief executive at Grimsby, praised Hughes warmly. She said he was a respected and much-loved member of the club. She noted his professionalism and kindness made a lasting impression on his colleagues.
Hughes started his career as a player. He had brief spells at Stockport County and Wrexham. In 2007, he became a performance analyst at Blackburn Rovers while his father managed the team. He later worked with Mark Hughes again at Manchester City and Fulham.
The club offered sincere condolences to Hughes’ wife, children, parents Mark and Jill, brother Curtis and sister Xenna. They also sent sympathies to his friends during this painful time.
