Atalanta and Cagliari representatives are scheduled to meet to discuss Gianluca Gaetano’s potential transfer, with the Serie A clubs currently separated by €6m in their valuation of the midfielder.
Atalanta have tabled an offer of €12m, while Cagliari are demanding €18m. Sky Sport Italia reports that the gap could narrow to a compromise of around €15m, though no deal has been concluded.
The pursuit comes at the specific request of new Atalanta coach Maurizio Sarri, who has identified Gaetano as a priority target to bolster his midfield. The Bergamo club are restructuring their squad following Sarri’s appointment.
Cagliari secure alternatives
Cagliari are preparing for Gaetano’s exit by advancing deals for replacements. They are reportedly close to finalising a €5m transfer with Pisa for Switzerland international Michel Aebischer.
The Sardinian club are also examining options to sign Inter Milan’s Kristjan Asllani. The midfielder has returned to his parent club after loan spells at Torino and Besiktas.
Cagliari would only pursue Asllani on a temporary basis, seeking a loan arrangement with an option to buy. This structure reflects the club’s preference for flexibility in the transfer market, allowing them to assess the player’s impact before committing to a permanent fee.
The potential reshuffle would significantly alter Cagliari’s midfield composition ahead of the new campaign, while Atalanta continue their recruitment drive under Sarri’s direction. The outcome of the scheduled negotiations between the clubs is likely to determine the next phase of the transfer chain, with Cagliari reluctant to sanction Gaetano’s departure until suitable replacements are secured.
