Argentina striker Julian Alvarez has publicly declared his desire to leave Atletico Madrid, stating he wants to “fulfil his dream” despite the Spanish club rejecting a €150 million (£130 million) bid from rivals Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old, currently representing Argentina at the World Cup, made the comments following his country’s victory over Austria. “I spoke with the people at [Atletico] I needed to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” Alvarez said. He added: “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person.”

Transfer Standoff

Atletico Madrid dismissed the substantial approach from Real Madrid earlier in June 2026. While the specific destination of Alvarez’s desired move remains unclear, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have also reportedly registered interest in securing the forward’s services.

The rejected bid, equivalent to approximately £130 million, would have represented a significant profit on the £81.5 million Atletico paid Manchester City to secure his signature in the summer of 2024. Alvarez’s public admission now places considerable pressure on the club’s hierarchy to facilitate a departure.

Mixed Spell in Spain

Alvarez has delivered strong overall returns during his time at the Metropolitano, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists across 106 appearances in all competitions. However, his form has varied significantly between competitions.

He found the net 17 times in his debut La Liga campaign but managed only eight league goals in the 2025-26 season. By contrast, he excelled in European competition, netting 10 goals in 15 Champions League matches to help Diego Simeone’s side reach the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Arsenal.

World Cup Duties

Alvarez is attempting to balance his club future with international responsibilities. He has featured from the substitute’s bench in Argentina’s opening two games after recovering from an ankle injury sustained prior to the tournament, including their victory over Austria.

His candid approach marks a departure from the usual diplomatic stance adopted by players during transfer windows, particularly while competing at major international tournaments. The striker’s determination to secure a move suggests a resolution may be required before the new season commences.
