Belgium delivered their most convincing display of the tournament to date, defeating New Zealand 5-1 to secure first place in World Cup Group G. The result, combined with Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Iran, confirmed the Red Devils and the Pharaohs as the two automatic qualifiers from the section while sending the Iranians into a nervous wait.

Belgium hit five to clinch group summit

Leonardo Trossard scored twice to establish a comfortable lead for Belgium before Kevin De Bruyne struck a decisive goal that proved crucial for goal difference. Elijah Just registered his third goal of the tournament for New Zealand, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when substitutes Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers added late goals to secure the comprehensive margin.

Arthur Theate of Eintracht Frankfurt impressed on his first World Cup start, producing a solid performance at the heart of the Belgian defence.

Egypt secure passage despite Iranian pressure

Egypt took an early lead against Iran through Mahmoud Saber’s fifth-minute strike, yet were forced to settle for a point after a spirited Iranian response. Ramin Rezaeian, the 36-year-old defender, scored his second goal of the tournament to level matters.

Iran might have claimed victory when Mehdi Taremi stepped up from the penalty spot, but the forward failed to convert. Veteran defender Shoja Khalilzadeh, 37, thought he had snatched a winner in added time only for the effort to be ruled out for a tight offside.

Knockout picture takes shape

The results leave Iran in limbo, their progression dependent upon outcomes across the remaining groups on Saturday. To advance as one of the best third-placed teams, they require a superior record than at least one other third-placed side.

Senegal have already secured their passage via the third-place route. Should Algeria and DR Congo triumph in their final fixtures, nine of the ten African representatives would progress to the Round of 32.

Belgium will face the winners of the tie between co-hosts USA and Bosnia & Herzegovina, should the Americans advance. Egypt, meanwhile, are seeded against Australia in the next round, though they will be without Mohanad Lasheen after the midfielder accumulated yellow cards across the group stage. A victory would set up a potential Round of 16 encounter with either holders Argentina or debutants Cape Verde.
