Stade Rennais have identified Charlie Cresswell as a priority defensive target ahead of their return to the UEFA Europa League, though the Breton club face stiff competition from Premier League side Crystal Palace, according to Ouest-France.

The 23-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s most consistent defenders following his move to Toulouse FC from Leeds United in 2024. Rennes have maintained a long-standing interest in the England youth international, with scouts monitoring his progress throughout the campaign.

However, securing Cresswell’s signature promises to be a complex operation. Crystal Palace have also registered firm interest in the defender as they brace for the potential departure of Maxence Lacroix, who has been linked with a switch to London rivals Chelsea.

Substantial valuation complicates negotiations

Any prospective deal would require a significant financial commitment. Toulouse value Cresswell at a minimum of €25 million, a figure that represents a five-fold increase on the €5 million fee they paid Leeds United just twelve months ago.

The Ligue 1 outfit operate under financial constraints and are obliged to sell players this summer to balance their accounts. Despite this necessity, they remain firm on their valuation of the central defender, who has become an integral part of their squad.

Palace succession planning

Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Cresswell appears directly linked to the uncertain future of Lacroix. The France international is attracting serious interest from Chelsea, prompting Palace to draw up contingency plans should their defensive cornerstone depart Selhurst Park.

Cresswell has demonstrated considerable adaptability since swapping Elland Road for southern France, establishing himself as a regular starter under former manager Carles Martinez Novell. The Spaniard has since departed for Bayer Leverkusen, leaving the Englishman as one of Toulouse’s most saleable assets.

Decision time approaches

With Toulouse compelled to offload talent this transfer window, Cresswell represents their most lucrative exit opportunity. Both Rennes and Crystal Palace will need to meet the €25 million asking price to secure the defender’s services.

The coming weeks will prove decisive for the former Leeds trainee. He must choose between returning to English football with Palace or embarking on a new chapter in Brittany, where European football awaits with Rennes’ Europa League campaign on the horizon.
