Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a club-record offer worth €99.7 million (£86m) to secure Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, according to reports. The North London club has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Italy international, with wages understood to be £275,000 per week.
The proposed fee comes close to Newcastle’s reported €100m valuation of the midfielder. Earlier in the summer, the Magpies rejected a separate approach valued at £80m, but the improved bid could prove sufficient to force a deal.
Italian connection strengthens Spurs’ hand
Although Arsenal and Manchester United have also registered interest in the 26-year-old, Tottenham have emerged as frontrunners in the race for his signature. Reports suggest the involvement of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi has influenced Tonali’s decision to favour a move to the capital.
The midfielder has indicated that he feels ready to leave St James’ Park after two seasons, seeking a new challenge.
Financial implications
If completed, the transfer would surpass Tottenham’s existing record signing. Tonali moved to Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for an initial €60.8m, with potential bonuses of up to €4m.
Milan negotiated a 10% sell-on clause as part of that original agreement, meaning the Serie A club would receive approximately €10m from the proceeds of any transfer to Tottenham.
Negotiation status
With personal terms settled and the bid expected to match Newcastle’s valuation, negotiations between the clubs appear to be at an advanced stage. However, the transfer remains subject to the final structure of payments being agreed.
Tonali, who turned 26 last month, has established himself as a key figure in Newcastle’s midfield since arriving from Italy. His potential departure would represent a significant change in direction for the Magpies, though the substantial fee would provide considerable funds for manager Eddie Howe to reinvest in the squad.
