Fiorentina are poised to complete the signing of Brazilian defender Viery from Grêmio after agreeing a deal worth €13 million plus add-ons. The 21-year-old is scheduled to undergo medical examinations in Florence on Tuesday before signing a five-year contract with the Serie A club.
The transfer represents the first major recruitment overseen by new head coach Fabio Grosso, who recently took charge at the Artemio Franchi stadium. According to Sky Sport Italia, Viery will arrive in Rome on Tuesday before travelling to Florence to complete the necessary formalities and finalise his switch from the Brazilian top flight.
Grêmio Academy Graduate
Viery operates primarily as a central defender but offers valuable tactical flexibility by covering left-back when required. The centre-back graduated from the Grêmio youth academy and received his promotion to the senior squad in February 2025.
Since establishing himself in the first team, the Brazilian has accumulated 27 appearances during the current campaign, contributing two goals and one assist. His performances have established him as a regular presence in the Porto Alegre side’s defensive lineup despite his relatively recent step up to senior football.
Beating European Rivals
Fiorentina faced significant competition to secure the defender’s services from several established European clubs. Nottingham Forest, LOSC Lille, Juventus, Brighton and Hove Albion, Napoli and Bologna had all registered interest in the 21-year-old.
The Serie A side moved decisively to reach an agreement with Grêmio, with Sky Sport Italia citing the transfer fee at €13 million plus additional bonuses. The five-year contract length indicates Fiorentina’s intent to integrate the Brazilian into their long-term squad planning.
Should the medical examinations proceed without complication, Viery will officially become Grosso’s first signing at the club, marking a significant statement of intent from the Florence outfit as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
