Bruno Genesio has been officially appointed as the new manager of Olympique de Marseille, taking over from Habib Beye, who has been relieved of his duties.

The Frenchman arrives at the Vélodrome fresh from his departure from Lille OSC at the end of the 2024-25 season. Despite leading Les Dogues back into the UEFA Champions League, Genesio’s contract expired and he opted to move on. His exit followed reports of tensions with club president Olivier Létang, and the manager had previously struck a negative tone when asked about potential extension talks, noting there were no signs of a renewal.

Beye pays price for missed targets

Beye’s dismissal comes after a brief tenure that began in February when he replaced Roberto De Zerbi. The club had set the former Senegal international clear objectives for the remainder of the campaign: securing qualification for the Champions League and reaching the semi-finals of the Coupe de France.

However, Beye failed to deliver on either front, falling short of both the European qualification target and the domestic cup requirement. This failure to meet the stated benchmarks has proven costly, with Marseille acting swiftly to secure a replacement before the new season begins.

Genesio ‘seduced by the challenge’

Genesio has not remained out of the game for long, and he expressed immediate enthusiasm about taking charge at Marseille. He stated he was “seduced by the challenge” presented to him, adding: “OM is a unique club, with exceptional history, a strong identity, and with fans whose passion is known well beyond our borders.”

While the club has not officially disclosed the length of the Frenchman’s deal at the Vélodrome, reports suggest his contract will run until 2028. If accurate, this would provide Genesio with a four-year mandate to reshape the squad and restore stability.

Rebuilding task at Stade Vélodrome

The appointment represents Genesio’s return to the dugout at a major French club, having previously enjoyed a spell in charge of Olympique Lyonnais. He inherits a squad that has experienced significant managerial turnover in recent months and faces the immediate task of preparing the team for the upcoming campaign. The new manager must address the shortcomings that led to Beye’s departure while navigating the intense scrutiny that comes with leading one of France’s most demanding football institutions.
