Newcastle United are increasingly confident of securing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi as they continue an ambitious recruitment drive. The Magpies have also reportedly struck an agreement to sign Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré, signalling a busy window for the Saudi-owned club.
Major sales fund rebuilding
The potential arrivals follow a transformative period of outgoings at St James’ Park. The club recently completed the €80 million sale of forward Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona, while midfielder Sandro Tonali is closing in on a €117 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur including performance-related add-ons. These significant sales have provided manager Eddie Howe with substantial resources to reinvest in his squad ahead of the new campaign.
World Cup form complicates Manzambi pursuit
Manzambi has emerged as a primary target to strengthen Newcastle’s engine room. The 20-year-old Switzerland international is currently competing at the World Cup, where he has delivered standout performances with three goals and one assist in three group stage matches. His displays in Qatar could yet attract additional interest from rival suitors, potentially complicating negotiations.
Freiburg are understood to value the midfielder at approximately €46-48 million. Sources suggest this figure could be sufficient to secure his release, though the German club may be reluctant to sanction a deal while their player remains on international duty. Advanced discussions are already underway between the clubs, but completion may be delayed until Switzerland’s tournament involvement concludes.
Double swoop on the cards
The pursuit of Manzambi comes after Newcastle reportedly finalised terms for Touré from Hoffenheim. The Ivorian winger would add pace and creativity to the attacking options, complementing the midfield reinforcement that Manzambi would provide.
With combined fees exceeding €200 million generated from recent transfers, Newcastle possess significant financial firepower to compete for both targets. The club’s recruitment team is working to complete deals swiftly, though the World Cup schedule presents a unique logistical challenge for finalising the Manzambi transfer while he remains focused on international duty.
