FC Lorient have reached an agreement with OGC Nice for the transfer of midfielder Gabin Bernardeau. The 20-year-old France youth international is set to depart the Allianz Riviera after a single season in which first-team opportunities remained limited.

From Academy to Fringes

Bernardeau developed through the youth ranks at Le Mans before joining Nice in 2025. The move represented a step up to one of Ligue 1’s established sides, yet the midfielder struggled to break into the senior setup during a turbulent campaign for Les Aiglons.

Across the league season, Bernardeau made only four substitute appearances. He found greater involvement in the Coupe de France, earning a starting berth in the Round of 16 victory against Montpellier and making two further appearances from the bench as Nice advanced to the final.

His lack of league action came during a season where Nice fought desperately to retain their top-flight status. The club ultimately preserved their place in the division through a play-off triumph over AS Saint-Étienne, avoiding the drop after a tense two-legged affair.

Deal Structure

The agreement between the clubs is reportedly valued at around €1 million. This figure represents a modest investment for Lorient as they seek to add youthful depth to their midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

The transfer marks a geographical return for Bernardeau to north-west France. Lorient, based in Brittany, fell just short of a top-half finish in their return to Ligue 1 last season, mounting a spirited challenge for European qualification during various stages of the campaign.

Career Progression

For Nice, the departure allows them to streamline their squad following the relegation scare. The club can now focus on rebuilding under more stable conditions after the anxiety of the play-offs.

Bernardeau will hope that the switch offers the regular first-team football that proved elusive at Nice. With Lorient establishing themselves back in the top flight, the 20-year-old has the opportunity to reignite a career that showed considerable promise during his formative years at Le Mans.

The completion of the transfer would see Bernardeau become part of a Lorient squad aiming to push further up the table this season, having demonstrated their capability to compete with the division’s established clubs during the previous campaign.
